Henny Hemmes was vanaf haar vierde jaar erg actief met schaatsen, zwemmen en rolschaatsen. Vanaf haar 15e jaar gaat de racerij haar interesseren. Henny begon steeds meer tijd te steken aan de vierwielers. Aan het begin van de jaren zeventig raakt ze betrokken bij de autosport. Ze trouwde met Peter Hemmes, hij was student autotechniek en sleutelde aan de Formule Ford van zijn vriend Roelof Wunderink. Roelof Wunderink werd Nederlands Kampioen Formule Ford. Roelof Wunderink het volgende jaar door Europa van circuit naar circuit. Tijdens het weekeinde en de vakantie vergezelde Henny Hemmes Roelof Wunderink en zorgde voor de tijdwaarneming. Voor het nieuw geformeerde Formule 3 team deed ze de public relations. Elk jaar ging Roelof Wunderink een stap hoger in de autosport, van Formule 3 naar Formule 5000 tot aan de Formule 1. Tot nu toe was het er nooit van gekomen om zelf achter het stuur van een racewagen te gaan zitten. Henny Hemmes ging naar de Formule Vee Racing School in Belgie van Formule 1 rijder André Pilette. Van de tachtig cursisten was Henny Hemmes de beste. Ze kocht haar eigen racewagen, een Toyota Celica GT 1600. In haar eerste jaar eindigde ze als vierde in het Nederlands Kampioenschap. Henny Hemmes werd instructrice bij de Rob Slotemaker antislipschool en gaf daar ook racecursussen. Ze heeft zich verder gespecialiseerd in de techniek van de motorsport.

Henny has been very active in skating, swimming and roller skating from age 4. Then at age 15 she became seriously involved in race rowing competition. But once bitten by the car bug in the early seventies, Henny began spending most of her life on four wheels. She was already familiar with auto racing from the beginning of the seventies. When she married Peter Hemmes, he was still a mechanical engineering student, who took care of the Formula Ford race car of a friend, Roelof Wunderink. Wunderink became Dutch Champion and the next year, the young men travelled through Europe from race track to race track. Henny joined them during the weekends and vacations and kept herself busy with time keeping and public relations for the newly formed race team that was competing in Formula 3. Each year meant a step forward: from F3 to Formula 5000 to F1. Henny however, was eager to take the wheel of a race car herself, but never got the chance to even drive through the paddock. The boys, being wary of her aspirations sent her to a talent hunt of former Formula 1-driver , who owned a Formula Vee racing school in Belgium. After winning that contest, nudging aside some eighty other rookies, Henny bought her own race car, a Toyota Celica GT 1600 to compete in The Netherlands. That very first year she finished fourth in the FIA Dutch National Championship Group B till 1600 cc. She also started as an instructor of the Racing School and the Anti-Skid School of Rob Slotemaker, further educating herself in the techniques of motor racing.

Begon te racen met een Toyota Celica 1600cc. Vierde in het kampioenschap en een polepostion in de regen.

Toyota Celica: 2e in zijn klasse tijdens de 24 uren Francorchamps en winnaar van een diamante ring voor de beste vrouwelijke prestatie.
